High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) provides direct images of the atomic structure of the samples; hence, it is possible to have direct information about the crystallographic structure of materials from images. High phase contrast images as small as a crystal cell can be acquired. This technique is widely used in advanced characterization of materials, allowing the acquisition of information about punctual defects, stacking faults, precipitates, and grain boundaries.
