What is the PMRC Scheme?
The Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme is a Central Sector Scheme under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. It is designed to engage outstanding Indian-origin scientists, researchers, technologists, and professionals currently working abroad and integrate them into India’s premier higher education institutions and national laboratories.
The scheme seeks to facilitate the return of global Indian talent to contribute to research, innovation, teaching, and mentorship in areas of national importance.
Why Was the PMRC Scheme Introduced?
India has witnessed substantial growth in research infrastructure, startup ecosystems, and innovation policies. However, attracting globally experienced researchers back to India has remained a challenge.
The PMRC Scheme addresses this by offering:

Duration and Scale of the Scheme
The PMRC Scheme is planned to operate over a five-year period from 2026–27 to 2030–31. According to official announcements, the scheme aims to engage at least 120 researchers during this period.
Categories of PMRC Fellows
The scheme offers opportunities across three career stages:
1. Young Research Fellows (YRF)
- Up to 5 years of post-PhD experience abroad
- Designed for early-career researchers demonstrating exceptional promise.
2. Senior Fellows (SF)
- 5 to less than 10 years of post-PhD experience abroad
- Intended for established researchers with significant contributions.
3. Research Chairs (RC)
- 10 years or more of post-PhD experience abroad
- Targeted at internationally recognized leaders in their fields.

- Top-ranked Higher Education Institutions,

- DBT,
- CSIR,
- ICMR.
The host institution provides the infrastructure and research environment necessary for successful implementation of the fellow’s proposed work.
